New dog, needs training…I need patience…..?

We just adopted a new dog from the shelter Princess. Shes a very sweet girl but has never really been in a home and needs some training. I have been working with her and shes doing good but she gets so frusterating. She chews up everthing and is horrible on a leash which makes me not want to take her out but she needs to exercise. I need advice on training as well as having patience with our new dog.
Would a Kong toy be good for her?

first thing is you should practice some meditation/deep breathing exercises so *you* are always calm with the dog and not frustrated, she’ll pick up on that, they can smell stress or frustration hormones from humans and react badly to it.

She definately needs the exercise, so she’ll be less destructive indoors. What kind of dog is she? some may need a job to do or just longer or faster walks.

my dogs for some reason never showed interest in kongs. my one dog is a hunter, she’ll chase a ball for a little bit but her enjoyment in life is just to sniff on walks and chew a busybone. My pups also love squeaky toys but just be careful they are durable enough she can’t tear them apart and get the squeaker.

my trainer at puppy obedience class i had didnt recommend a halter because they pull more on halters since they dont feel any pull on their necks. Every time she bites the leash, just stop walking and remove it from her mouth saying “leave it” or “drop it”whatever command you want. When she does drop it, have a treat ready and reward her. At first it seems like you’re getting no where, but give it a little more time.

Practice “drop it” indoors too, with “give and take”..it’s a game where you take a toy and hold it in front of her until she takes it from your hand and you say “take”. Wait a few seconds, then you say “give” and take it from her. Do this just a few times and then reward. Then you build up to the “drop it” where she gives it up on her own. always reward then!

I learned that stuff and other things at puppy obedience class. I went to petco but there’s other ones, some people don’t think petco is the best because you get hit or miss with the trainers there, some have no experience. But it was $95 for 6 weeks one hr a week. Training classes will strengthen the bond between you and her.
